Video takes the drive out of it, so the hour goes to the two of you instead of to I-275.

Where sessions happen

By secure video from anywhere in Florida, or in person at our Lakeland office.

The short answer

Ascend Mind and Body offers couples therapy and marriage counseling to Tampa couples. Sessions are by secure video anywhere in Florida, together or from two places, or in person at 832 South Florida Avenue in Lakeland. Therapy is self-pay. Call (863) 510-2624 or request a callback.

Couples come in over a money argument that never ends, broken trust, a new baby, or an upcoming wedding. You do not need a crisis. Wanting the relationship to feel different is enough.

Sessions draw on well-studied couples approaches such as the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and our therapy team is LGBTQIA+ affirming.

How sessions work

Three ways Tampa couples can meet

Same therapy in each, and you can switch between them.

  1. 01

    Together, on one screen

Side by side on the couch in Seminole Heights or at a kitchen table in Westchase. A laptop beats a phone held at arm's length.

  2. 02

    From two places

One of you at a desk downtown, the other at home in Carrollwood or out toward Brandon, each somewhere private.

  3. 03

    In person in Lakeland

Our office sits about 35 miles east of downtown Tampa on I-4.

For video, each of you must be physically in Florida during the session, so a partner traveling or on temporary duty out of state waits until they are back. Never join while driving.

Fitting it in

Making couples therapy fit a Tampa schedule

Sessions run Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. That is a real limit for rotating hospital shifts, port schedules that change week to week, or duty days at MacDill Air Force Base, and we would rather say so up front.

Video removes the drive across the Howard Frankland or down Dale Mabry, so a session can fit into a long lunch or the gap between two shifts. From New Tampa, South Tampa, or Westchase, the two-location option can be what makes regular sessions possible.

The first session

What the first session looks like

Both of you attend, on one video link or in one room. Your therapist asks what brought you in, what you have tried, and what you want to be different, including how your arguments usually unfold, from the first sharp word to whoever leaves the room.

She will not pick a winner. The work targets the pattern between you, and early on you agree on a shared goal. Confidentiality and its limits are explained at the start.

Cost

Self-pay, with your rate quoted before you book

The short answer

Ascend does not bill insurance for therapy. Your rate is quoted before you book, and we provide superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many plans exclude couples counseling, so ask your insurer first. More on our insurance page.

When it is not the right fit

When couples therapy is not the right first step

Joint sessions only work when both partners can speak honestly without paying for it later. With physical violence, threats, or one partner controlling the other's money, phone, or movements, couples therapy can raise the risk. Individual support and a safety plan come first: call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 24/7, at 1-800-799-7233, or 911 in immediate danger.

No outcome is promised. Some couples finish closer; some decide to part, and that clarity counts too.

Questions

Questions Tampa couples ask before they call

Can we do couples therapy in person in Tampa?

In person, couples sessions are held at our Lakeland office, about 35 miles east of downtown Tampa on I-4. For Tampa couples, secure video works from anywhere in Florida, and you can mix the two.

Can we join from two different places?

Yes. You each log in to the same secure session from wherever you are, as long as you are both physically in Florida and somewhere private.

What does it cost, and do you take insurance?

Couples therapy is self-pay; Ascend does not bill insurance for therapy. Your rate is quoted before you book, and superbills are provided for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

What happens in the first session?

Both partners attend. Your therapist asks each of you what brought you in and what you want to change, explains confidentiality, and helps you set a shared goal. No one is cast as the problem.

Do you offer premarital counseling for Tampa couples?

Yes, by video or in Lakeland. Sessions cover money, family expectations, conflict styles, and intimacy, so those talks happen before the wedding instead of in the middle of an argument.

What if my partner does not want to come?

You can start with individual sessions and invite your partner later. Some partners agree once they hear the focus is the pattern between you, not blame. The choice stays theirs.

Is couples therapy safe if there is abuse in the relationship?

Not while there is ongoing violence, threats, or coercive control, because joint sessions can increase the danger. Start with individual support and a safety plan. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233. In an emergency, call 911.
